Head to head

Phuket or Koh Phangan for Muay Thai

Two islands with nearly the same floor price, wildly different ceilings and wet seasons at opposite ends of the year.

Updated 2026-10-14 · 5 comparisons include Phuket

The verdict

The floors are almost identical and the ceilings are not. A month of unlimited training starts at 9,000 baht on Phuket and 8,800 on Koh Phangan, but Phuket runs up to 16,800 and Koh Phangan stops at 10,000, so on Phuket the camp you pick decides the bill and on Koh Phangan it barely moves it. The wet seasons fall at opposite ends of the year, which settles more trips than the money does.

Decide on conditions

Which one is you

Pick Phuket if

  • You want to see several camps before committing, and there are more of them here than anywhere else

  • You are coming between May and October, when the Gulf side is still dry and the Andaman is not

  • You want to fly in rather than fly, drive and then sail

  • You are willing to pay at the top of the range for a camp that fits exactly

Everything we list in Phuket

Pick Koh Phangan if

  • You want the bill decided before you choose, because every camp here charges within 1,200 baht of the others

  • You are coming between January and April, which is the driest stretch on this coast

  • You would rather know the price of everything up front, which all 4 camps here publish

  • You want a small island where leaving the gym does not mean entering a resort economy

What each one costs

The money, side by side

The cheapest month anyone prints in Koh Phangan is 8,800 baht, from all 4 camps listed. In Phuket it is 9,000, from 5 of 7 listed camps. We compare the cheapest rather than the middle because at these counts a middle is one camp wearing the name of a region.

Camp by camp

Each line runs from the cheapest figure any camp in Thailand publishes for that rate to the dearest, with every Phuket camp marked above the line and every Koh Phangan camp below it. Camps printing the same figure stack rather than share a mark, so the marks can be counted. Across the 4 rates both regions publish, camps interleave on 3 and sit clear of each other on one. Camp by camp in baht, Phuket first then Koh Phangan: on one group session, 4 camps from 500 to 600 against 4 camps from 400 to 450; on a week unlimited, 5 camps from 3,000 to 5,500 against 4 camps from 3,000 to 3,300; on a month unlimited, 5 camps from 9,000 to 16,800 against 4 camps from 8,800 to 10,000; on one private, 2 camps from 800 to 1,000 against 4 camps from 700 to 1,000. Where they interleave, neither region holds camps that all sit below the other, so the region narrows the choice without settling the price. Rates only one of the two regions publishes are left out, and so are rates too few camps nationally publish to give the line meaningful ends.

The detail

How they actually differ

The cheap island story is wrong, and the numbers on this site say so. Across the 7 Phuket camps listed here and the 4 on Koh Phangan, the lowest monthly rate on each island is 200 baht apart. What separates them is the top: Phuket spreads 7,800 baht between its cheapest month and its dearest, and Koh Phangan spreads 1,200. Phuket is not more expensive, it is more variable, and on a variable island the research is worth money.

The smaller island is the better documented one. All 4 Koh Phangan camps publish a group rate, a week, a month and a private. On Phuket 5 of 7 publish a month and only 2 publish a private, so two of the biggest camp clusters in the country quote nothing a reader can check before writing to them. That gap is the single most useful thing to know before planning either trip.

Season decides the rest. Phuket is driest December to March and wettest roughly May to October; Koh Phangan is driest January to April and wettest roughly October to December. The overlap in which they are both dry is narrow, so a trip that is badly timed for one island is often well timed for the other, and that fact is worth more than any argument about which has the better gyms.

The thing people miss

Koh Phangan has no airport. The crossing from Samui is open water, rough weather in the wet months cancels sailings, and a cancelled ferry is a day lost at both ends of the trip. Phuket costs more at the top and never costs you that.

Camps in Phuket

Tiger Muay Thai

Chalong, Phuket, large camp

The largest and best-known training complex in Thailand, running Muay Thai alongside a full MMA and BJJ programme. Big enough that you can always find training partners at your level, and structured enough that a total beginner is never left guessing. The trade-off is scale: it feels like a fitness resort rather than a Thai gym, and it is priced accordingly.

Sinbi Muay Thai

Rawai, Phuket, mid-size camp

A long-running Rawai camp that stayed Muay Thai only while neighbours diversified into MMA. Reputation is built on Thai trainer quality and pad work rather than facilities. Suits people who want to actually get better at Muay Thai rather than sample several martial arts.

Dragon Muay Thai

Chalong, Phuket, mid-size camp

Mid-sized Chalong camp with a reputation for a friendly, less intimidating atmosphere than the larger complexes nearby. A reasonable first camp for someone nervous about walking into a hard gym.

Diamond Muay Thai

Nai Wok, Koh Phangan, small camp

Koh Phangan camp with a strong long-stay and wellness crossover crowd. Relaxed pace and a small group size. Progress depends heavily on who else happens to be on the island that month, which cuts both ways.

Martial Arts Academy Koh Phangan

Woktum, Koh Phangan, mid-size camp

A multi-discipline academy at Woktum running two Muay Thai sessions a day, with a separate all-access membership covering the other classes, the ice bath and the open gym. If Muay Thai is all you want, the Muay Thai pass is the cheaper way in and the membership is not worth the gap. Three bungalows sit on the gym grounds without a published rate. It also sells a six month membership that includes documents for a visa application, which says plainly who it is built for.

Chinnarach Muay Thai

Koh Phangan, small camp

Two two-hour group sessions a day, priced in two columns so one a day costs less than two. Accommodation is on the gym's own plot and sold by the week or the month rather than the night, starting with the option of sleeping in the gym itself, which is as cheap as training in Thailand gets. A private with the head coach costs roughly three times a session with a trainer, which tells you how the place is organised before you arrive.

What the data says about Phuket and Koh Phangan

Everything below is counted off the 7 camps we list in Phuket and the 4 in Koh Phangan, read from what each one publishes on its own site.
How far apart are Phuket and Koh Phangan?
About 260 km in a straight line, from the nearest camp we hold a pin for in Phuket to the nearest in Koh Phangan. That is a long travelling day. Doing both is realistic on a trip of a month or more and awkward on anything shorter. The line runs pin to pin, so read it as the floor on that journey rather than a description of it.
Can you stay at the camp in Phuket or Koh Phangan?
4 of the 7 camps listed in Phuket say on their own site that you can sleep there, against 3 of the 4 in Koh Phangan. Another 3 between them have not said either way, and we print that as a gap rather than reading the silence as a no. Where a camp does take you in, the bed and the training tend to move together, so it changes what a month costs more than the rate card suggests.
Are the camps bigger in Phuket or Koh Phangan?
Of the 7 in Phuket, one is a large camp, 5 are mid-size and one is small. Of the 4 in Koh Phangan, 2 are mid-size camps and 2 are small. Size is the one structural thing every camp here is on record for, and it changes a trip more than the rate does. A large camp has more sessions, more sparring partners and more people who arrived the same week as you. A small one has the head trainer watching you and nowhere to hide.
How many sessions a day do camps run in Phuket and Koh Phangan?
3 of the 7 in Phuket publish a count and all 4 in Koh Phangan do, and every one of those, on both sides, runs 2 sessions a day. A timetable tells you when the door is open. This tells you how many times a day you are expected to walk through it, which is the difference between a month of training and a month of mornings.
Where can you watch fights, Phuket or Koh Phangan?
2 in Phuket, Bangla Boxing Stadium and Patong Boxing Stadium, and none we can place in Koh Phangan. That is a gap in what we have placed rather than a claim that nobody fights there. Almost everybody who comes out to train wants to sit at a stadium one night of the trip. Where we hold a pin for both a venue and a camp in the same region, the camp pages print the distance between them, because neither side has any reason to tell you.
How do you get to Phuket and Koh Phangan?
Phuket is Phuket International (HKT). Koh Phangan is Samui (USM) then ferry. Koh Phangan does not end at the airport, so budget that onward leg into the first day and the last. An airport code is not a doorstep, and the last leg is the part of a comparison that never shows up in a rate card and shows up in every trip. It is worth pricing before the sessions are, because it is paid twice.
Is Phuket or Koh Phangan better for a first trip?
5 of the 7 camps listed in Phuket say they take people who have never trained, against all 4 in Koh Phangan. That is what the camps say about themselves rather than a ranking, and almost every camp that answers at all answers yes, so read it as who bothered to write it down. The useful signal sits underneath: a camp that spells out what a first session looks like has thought about the question, and a camp saying nothing has not.
