Head to head

Phuket or Krabi for Muay Thai

The same coast and the same weather, and two scenes that are nothing like the same size.

The verdict

Phuket lists seven camps and Krabi lists four, and all four of the Krabi gyms are small. Phuket if you want choice, structure and a room you can price before you fly. Krabi if you want to pay session by session at a gym where missing a morning gets noticed.

Decide on conditions

Which one is you

Pick Phuket if

  • You want to try a camp, dislike it, and be training elsewhere the next morning

  • You want a room on site at a rate you can check before you book the flight

  • You want the biggest camps on the Andaman coast and the structure that comes with them

  • It is your first trip and you would rather the landing was easy

Everything we list in Phuket

Pick Krabi if

  • You are paying session by session rather than buying a month up front

  • You want a gym small enough that skipping a session gets noticed

  • You are flying into Krabi and have no interest in routing through Phuket

  • Climbing at Railay, or the boats out to Lanta and Phi Phi, are part of the trip

What each one costs

The money, side by side

The cheapest month anyone prints in Phuket is 9,000 baht, from 5 of 7 listed camps. In Krabi it is 10,000, from 1 of 4 listed camps. We compare the cheapest rather than the middle because at these counts a middle is one camp wearing the name of a region.

Camp by camp

Each line runs from the cheapest figure any camp in Thailand publishes for that rate to the dearest, with every Phuket camp marked above the line and every Krabi camp below it. Camps printing the same figure stack rather than share a mark, so the marks can be counted. Across the 4 rates both regions publish, camps interleave on every one. Camp by camp in baht, Phuket first then Krabi: on one group session, 4 camps from 500 to 600 against 4 camps from 250 to 500; on a week unlimited, 5 camps from 3,000 to 5,500 against one camp at 3,000; on a month unlimited, 5 camps from 9,000 to 16,800 against one camp at 10,000; on one private, 2 camps from 800 to 1,000 against 2 camps from 800 to 1,000. Where they interleave, neither region holds camps that all sit below the other, so the region narrows the choice without settling the price. Rates only one of the two regions publishes are left out, and so are rates too few camps nationally publish to give the line meaningful ends.

The detail

How they actually differ

Weather does not decide this one, which is unusual for two places this far apart on a map. Both run the Andaman calendar, driest December to March and wettest May to October, so the lever people normally pull to break a tie gives the same answer twice. What is left is the size of the scene.

The money is not where people expect it either. Every camp in Krabi publishes a single session price and the dearest of them costs what the cheapest drop-in in Phuket costs, so the saving is real but it is a saving per session. Buy time in bulk and it closes: the one Krabi camp that publishes a week matches the cheapest week in Phuket, and the one that publishes a month sits above the cheapest month in Phuket. The bed is the part you cannot check in advance, because Phuket camps publish room rates and Krabi camps do not.

Choice is the real trade. Seven camps means a bad fit costs you a morning: you walk out on Tuesday and train somewhere else on Wednesday. Four camps means a bad fit costs you the trip. The same arithmetic run the other way is the reason people go: in a gym that small the trainer remembers what you did yesterday, and nobody in Phuket is going to notice you at all for a fortnight.

The thing people miss

One camp in Krabi publishes a monthly rate and one publishes a weekly one. Budget a long stay off those and you are budgeting off a single gym, which is a different thing from a local price.

Phuket

Camps in Phuket

Tiger Muay Thai

Chalong, Phuket, large camp

The largest and best-known training complex in Thailand, running Muay Thai alongside a full MMA and BJJ programme. Big enough that you can always find training partners at your level, and structured enough that a total beginner is never left guessing. The trade-off is scale: it feels like a fitness resort rather than a Thai gym, and it is priced accordingly.

Sinbi Muay Thai

Rawai, Phuket, mid-size camp

A long-running Rawai camp that stayed Muay Thai only while neighbours diversified into MMA. Reputation is built on Thai trainer quality and pad work rather than facilities. Suits people who want to actually get better at Muay Thai rather than sample several martial arts.

Dragon Muay Thai

Chalong, Phuket, mid-size camp

Mid-sized Chalong camp with a reputation for a friendly, less intimidating atmosphere than the larger complexes nearby. A reasonable first camp for someone nervous about walking into a hard gym.

Camps in Krabi

Emerald Muay Thai

Ao Nang, Krabi, small camp

One of the few established camps in Krabi, which is the appeal: mainland scenery and climbing on the doorstep without the density of the Phuket scene. Smaller trainee pool means fewer partners at your exact level. The same operator runs a second camp at Rawai Beach in Phuket, so confirm which of the two you are booking. English on the pads is in writing but rests on one named head trainer rather than the whole floor.

Honour Muay Thai

Ao Nang, Krabi, small camp

A small Ao Nang gym that publishes a daily rate and nothing else: train once a day or twice, and pay by the day. There is no week, month or private price on the site, and the rooms beside the gym are quoted on request, so the cost of a long stay has to be asked for rather than read. Suits somebody already in Ao Nang who wants to train while they are there more than somebody planning a month around a camp.

E.N. Muaythai Gym

Ao Nang, Krabi, small camp

Two two-hour sessions a day, six days a week, and a price list three lines long: a class, a day pass, and a private for two students sharing one coach. No week or month rate makes a long stay awkward to budget, and the gym has no accommodation of its own. It reads as the daily training option for somebody already staying in Ao Nang.

What the data says about Phuket and Krabi

Everything below is counted off the 7 camps we list in Phuket and the 4 in Krabi, read from what each one publishes on its own site.
How far apart are Phuket and Krabi?
About 50 km in a straight line, from the nearest camp we hold a pin for in Phuket to the nearest in Krabi. That is close enough that one trip can hold both, and splitting a month between them is a real option rather than a thought experiment. The line runs pin to pin, so read it as the floor on that journey rather than a description of it.
Can you stay at the camp in Phuket or Krabi?
4 of the 7 camps listed in Phuket say on their own site that you can sleep there, against one of the 4 in Krabi. Another 4 between them have not said either way, and we print that as a gap rather than reading the silence as a no. Where a camp does take you in, the bed and the training tend to move together, so it changes what a month costs more than the rate card suggests.
Are the camps bigger in Phuket or Krabi?
Of the 7 in Phuket, one is a large camp, 5 are mid-size and one is small. All 4 in Krabi are small camps. Size is the one structural thing every camp here is on record for, and it changes a trip more than the rate does. A large camp has more sessions, more sparring partners and more people who arrived the same week as you. A small one has the head trainer watching you and nowhere to hide.
How many sessions a day do camps run in Phuket and Krabi?
3 of the 7 in Phuket publish a count and 3 of the 4 in Krabi do, and every one of those, on both sides, runs 2 sessions a day. A timetable tells you when the door is open. This tells you how many times a day you are expected to walk through it, which is the difference between a month of training and a month of mornings.
Where can you watch fights, Phuket or Krabi?
2 in Phuket, Bangla Boxing Stadium and Patong Boxing Stadium, and none we can place in Krabi. That is a gap in what we have placed rather than a claim that nobody fights there. Almost everybody who comes out to train wants to sit at a stadium one night of the trip. Where we hold a pin for both a venue and a camp in the same region, the camp pages print the distance between them, because neither side has any reason to tell you.
How do you get to Phuket and Krabi?
Phuket is Phuket International (HKT). Krabi is Krabi International (KBV). An airport code is not a doorstep, and the last leg is the part of a comparison that never shows up in a rate card and shows up in every trip. It is worth pricing before the sessions are, because it is paid twice.
Is Phuket or Krabi better for a first trip?
5 of the 7 camps listed in Phuket say they take people who have never trained, against all 4 in Krabi. That is what the camps say about themselves rather than a ranking, and almost every camp that answers at all answers yes, so read it as who bothered to write it down. The useful signal sits underneath: a camp that spells out what a first session looks like has thought about the question, and a camp saying nothing has not.
