Month 02 of 12

February

The last month the whole country works, and the month the air in the north starts to go.

In February, train in Hua Hin, Krabi, Koh Samui and Bangkok. Think twice about Chiang Mai and Pai.

February still reads like January on a rainfall chart. It is not January, because the fields and the forest inland begin to burn, and the burning is not a rainfall problem. It arrives in the weeks the weather would otherwise be at its best and it is felt in a hard session rather than on a beach day.

If the north is the plan, February is the edge of it. The first half is usually the cool dry weather people come for and the second half is where the readings start to climb, which is why a February trip to Chiang Mai is a decision about dates rather than about the month.

The months the region prints as its own driest stretch. Comfortable rather than guaranteed, and in the busiest regions it is also the most expensive and the hardest to book.

Dates that can move

Most trips can move by a fortnight and a fortnight is the difference between two of these pages. Both neighbours are worth reading before the dates are booked rather than after.
  • The month before

    January

The one stretch of the year when every coast and the whole interior are dry at the same time, which makes the decision about everything except the weather.

  • The month after

    March

Dry everywhere on paper, and the single worst month of the year to train inland.
