Month 01 of 12

January

The one stretch of the year when every coast and the whole interior are dry at the same time, which makes the decision about everything except the weather.

In January, train in Chiang Mai, Pai, Isaan (Northeast) and Hua Hin. Think twice about Phuket.

January is the only month alongside February where the Andaman coast, the southern Gulf, the upper Gulf, the central plains and the north are all inside their dry windows at once. Nothing in the climate is choosing for you, so the thing to compare is how full a camp is and what it is charging while it is full.

That is not a neutral fact in Phuket. The island is in its busiest weeks, and the camps there are the hardest in the country to walk into without having booked. The north is the inversion worth knowing about: Chiang Mai and Pai are dry and the air has not gone yet, which is a window that closes within weeks.

Inside the dry window

The months the region prints as its own driest stretch. Comfortable rather than guaranteed, and in the busiest regions it is also the most expensive and the hardest to book.

Dates that can move

Most trips can move by a fortnight and a fortnight is the difference between two of these pages. Both neighbours are worth reading before the dates are booked rather than after.
  • The month before

    December

The clearest split of the year. Eight regions dry at once and the two Gulf islands in the heaviest of their rain.

  • The month after

    February

The last month the whole country works, and the month the air in the north starts to go.
