Camp against camp

Sinbi Muay Thai or Sumalee Boxing Gym

Two camps in Phuket, set against each other on what each one publishes about itself. Nothing below is our opinion of either.

The short version

A single group session is 600 THB at Sinbi Muay Thai and 500 THB at Sumalee Boxing Gym. They line up on 5 of the lines both camps publish.

Sinbi Muay Thai

Week and month cover two group sessions a day. One a day is 3,000 and 8,000, three months 27,000, a year 85,000. The room rate is low-season twin share per person at Sinbi Apartments, 300 m from the gym, and it includes two group sessions a day.

Sumalee Boxing Gym

The month is unlimited group training and expires 28 days from purchase; once a day is 8,000. Under-16s train at half price. Rooms on site include both daily group classes but are quoted on enquiry rather than published, and private sessions are not on the rates page.

Against the country

Each line runs from the cheapest figure listed camps print for that rate to the dearest, with Sinbi Muay Thai marked above the line, Sumalee Boxing Gym below it and the stretch between them inked. In baht, Sinbi Muay Thai first, then Sumalee Boxing Gym: one group session at 600 and 500, 100 apart inside a run of 550 that 31 of 44 listed camps print; a week, unlimited at 4,000 and 3,500, 500 apart inside a run of 3,700 that 21 of 44 listed camps print; a month, unlimited the same at 12,000, inside a run of 14,001 that 26 of 44 listed camps print. Rates only one of the two publishes are left out, because a line carrying one mark says nothing about two camps.

They quote the same figure on 3 lines: a month unlimited, rooms on site and takes beginners.

What we cannot tell you yet

Neither camp has been confirmed on the lines below, so this page does not compare them. They are named rather than left off, because a comparison that only shows the fields it happens to hold is the shape of a page pretending to be complete.

In their own words

What each camp is

Sinbi Muay Thai

A long-running Rawai camp that stayed Muay Thai only while neighbours diversified into MMA. Reputation is built on Thai trainer quality and pad work rather than facilities. Suits people who want to actually get better at Muay Thai rather than sample several martial arts.

The full record for Sinbi Muay Thai

Sumalee Boxing Gym

Smaller camp in the quieter north of Phuket, away from the Rawai and Chalong concentration. Being out of the tourist strip is the point: fewer distractions, smaller groups, more trainer attention. Less convenient if you want nightlife or a big social scene.

What people ask about Sinbi Muay Thai and Sumalee Boxing Gym

Every figure below is read off the two records at build time rather than written by hand, so a question neither camp has published anything behind is left out instead of answered softly.
Is Sinbi Muay Thai or Sumalee Boxing Gym cheaper?
Neither. Sinbi Muay Thai and Sumalee Boxing Gym both print a month of unlimited training at 12,000 baht. They both quote 2 other priced lines, and Sumalee Boxing Gym is lower on 2. A cheaper month is not a cheaper trip. Food, a room where the camp has none and the flight home all sit outside these figures, and a camp that is 2,000 baht dearer a month is the cheaper of the two the moment it saves you a daily taxi.
What is the difference between Sinbi Muay Thai and Sumalee Boxing Gym?
2 of the 5 lines both camps publish come out different: a single group session and a week of unlimited training. They match on a month of unlimited training, whether there are rooms on site and whether beginners are taken. Sinbi Muay Thai publishes a private session, a nightly room rate and how many sessions a day run. Sumalee Boxing Gym publishes none of those. What separates two camps on the mats is the trainer you get put with, and no camp publishes that. Use the lines above to cut the list down, then ask both.
Is Sinbi Muay Thai or Sumalee Boxing Gym better for a beginner?
Both. Sinbi Muay Thai and Sumalee Boxing Gym each read as a room somebody who has never trained can walk into. That is a call made at a desk from what each camp publishes about who it trains, not a verdict from the mats. A gym built around a fight team will take a beginner's money and leave them holding pads at the back for a month, so ask both how a first session actually runs before you book either.
Can you stay at Sinbi Muay Thai or Sumalee Boxing Gym?
Both. Sinbi Muay Thai and Sumalee Boxing Gym each say on their own site that you can sleep at the camp. Sinbi Muay Thai prints a nightly rate at 1,100 baht. Staying in means the commute stops being a decision you make twice a day at five in the morning, which matters more than the saving on most trips shorter than a month.
How far apart are Sinbi Muay Thai and Sumalee Boxing Gym?
About 20 km in a straight line, measured between the two pins rather than along a road, so a motorbike covers more ground than that and traffic decides the rest. Both camps sit in Phuket. That is a ride rather than a walk, so trying both in one trip means picking a base and paying to cross, or splitting the stay in two.
